How to Get Your Vehicle Towed Safely
The worst has happened, and you need to call a tow truck to move your vehicle. Luckily, River City Towing is here to help! We can get you a tow 24/7 anywhere in Edmonton and the surrounding area.
But before we pick you up, there are a few things that you can do to help us get your vehicle towed safely.
Here’s a few tips:
- Have your owner’s manual ready – We will need to tow your vehicle depending on the type of transmission it has and depending on whether it’s front-wheel drive, rear-wheel drive or all-wheel drive. Some vehicles need to be towed in neutral and sometimes we may need to disconnect the drive shaft. It is important for us to find out the correct towing requirements for your vehicle so that we don’t damage it.
- Roll up windows and close your sunroof – You never know when the weather could change, so make sure that all your windows are rolled up and that your sunroof is closed so that the weather doesn’t ruin your vehicle’s interior.
- Release the emergency brake – Keeping your emergency brake engaged while your vehicle is being towed can cause damage to your vehicle. Make sure that the emergency brake is disengaged before we hook it up to tow it.
- Remove any valuables or breakables – If you were carrying anything valuable or breakable in your vehicle, make sure to remove it before we tow it to ensure it makes it home with you safely.
- Check that your brake and warning lights work – When your car is being towed, we will connect it to the tow truck so that the brake and warning lights will light up when we slow down. Vehicles behind the car being towed need to know when the brakes are on so they can slow down, so it’s important to have the key in the ignition and turned to “on” without starting the engine so that the brake lights and warning lights will work.
- Check to see if your power steering is working – If your car’s power steering system is broken, it shouldn’t be towed by pulling it behind another car. This can be dangerous because it makes it hard for the wheels to turn in the right way to follow the vehicle doing the towing. It can cause not only increased damage to the steering system but also to a vehicle’s engine and brakes. If a vehicle with power steering problems needs to be towed, it should be towed using a car carrier so that its wheels are completely off the ground while the vehicle is in transit.
